How to Measure
Step 1: Sketch out an outline of your room. It doesn’t have to be super detailed, just make sure to note anything you’ll be measuring (doors, windows, etc).
Step 2: Measure the total length of the walls. Place a tape measure on the floor and measure from corner to corner along the baseboard. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch.
Step 3: Measure doors and doorways. With your tape measure on the floor, measure the door opening. Make sure to note which way the door swings open and to measure the distance to the nearest wall.
Step 4: Measure windows. Measure the width and height of the windows (opening only, not the frame). Measure how high the window is off the floor. Remember to measure the distance between windows and the distance from the nearest wall.
Step 5: Measure architectural features. If applicable, measure any fixture that is permanent, like a fireplace. Note the width and height of the fixture, how far it sticks out into the room, and the distance from the nearest wall or door.
Step 6: Measure any furniture you plan on keeping. Measure width, height, depth, and seat height (if applicable).
Step 7: Measure the ceiling height.
Step 8: Take photos. Take a mix of close-up and far away shots. Don’t forget to take pictures of any adjacent rooms. It will help us redraw, space plan, and design to be cohesive with your other rooms.
