Tucked into the leafy landscape of Austin’s Balcones Country Club, this kitchen remodel was a story of transformation—one where serenity, functionality, and natural materials converged.

The homeowners had already begun renovating other parts of the home, but when it came to the kitchen—the heart of the house—they knew they needed expert guidance. Their vision: a modern kitchen design that felt like an extension of nature. They craved calm, clean lines, organic textures, and a space that honored its greenbelt views.

Our design language for the project was rooted in Japandi—a harmonious blend of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics. The layout, though spacious in square footage, posed challenges in flow, storage, and proportion. But each obstacle opened the door to thoughtful design moves that made the final space not just functional, but deeply restorative.

From the beginning, the window placement posed a design dilemma. The existing low-set window threw off the visual rhythm of the space. Replacing it wasn’t an option, so we embraced a soft, architectural workaround: a roller shade mounted from the ceiling that invited the eye upward and quieted the asymmetry.

The original island configuration also needed attention. Its angled layout restricted circulation and created an awkward breakfast nook. We reimagined it as a simple, elongated island—with seating for four and plenty of work surface. The result? A kitchen that breathes. One that welcomes people in without crowding the cook.

Even with ample square footage, we had to respect every inch. The walk path behind the island, for instance, came in just shy of the recommended NKBA minimum at 40.5″. But by adjusting cabinetry depth elsewhere, we maintained a sense of openness without sacrificing functionality.

Japandi kitchens are known for their sense of calm, and this one achieves that through contrast and cohesion.

White oak floors and soft white walls reflect natural light throughout the space, while walnut cabinetry adds depth and warmth. These elements—organic yet refined—anchor the kitchen and blur the boundary between indoors and out.

Lighting was designed to flex with the family’s rhythms. Pendant lights above the island create visual interest, while recessed lighting and LED tape light allow for moody evenings or bright morning prep. Every bulb, every fixture was chosen with intention.

Perhaps the most beloved feature of this kitchen is its versatile bar—a space that transitions effortlessly from morning coffee to evening cocktails.

By blending display, hidden storage, and surface area, we crafted a zone that feels both beautiful and intuitive. The glass-front cabinet gives a subtle glow at night, while drawers on both sides house everything from espresso pods to glassware.

It’s a reminder that kitchen design isn’t just about how a space looks—it’s about how it supports life.

From a reeded glass pantry door to corner pullouts and deep drawers, storage for this Japandi Kitchen was thoughtfully layered in without cluttering the aesthetic. We used vertical space wherever possible and balanced open and closed storage to maintain a sense of simplicity.

The overall goal? A kitchen that functions seamlessly, without visual noise.
