Interior Design: Client Priorities
From our first conversation, the clients made their vision clear. They wanted:
- A bright, modern space
- Heated floors
- A larger, more comfortable toilet area
- Better, more thoughtful storage
- A large double walk-in shower
- All while maintaining a realistic budget
The challenge? The existing bathroom wasn’t very big. And the oversized window—while beautiful—completely dictated the layout.
Creative Planning Within Constraints
We always begin with layout. In this space, reworking the window was going to add thousands in siding and exterior costs-but with cost savings in other areas, we were able to make it work.
After multiple design iterations, we landed on a layout that:
- Removed the tub entirely (it didn’t serve the clients)
- Extended the shower to a full double walk-in configuration
- Preserved natural light by replacing the awkward low window with a taller, narrow privacy window
- Upgraded the vanity to a 36″ high warm walnut cabinet for added storage and to ground the space making it feel warm and bright.

Bathroom Layout Ideas You Can Use
Throughout this project, we leaned on several tried-and-true modern bathroom layout principles:
- A walk-in shower should be at least 42″ wide
- Curbless or zero entry creates a seamless, universal design
- 18″ on center minimum is needed at the toilet (plus clearances)
- Choose cohesive tiles with minimal transitions to make the room feel larger
- Add a skylight or high privacy window for natural light without exposure
- Use exhaust fans with 110+ CFM near the shower
- Plan towel placement early—not as an afterthought
- Electrical outlets and lighting zones should be reviewed carefully in any bathroom plan

Challenges We Solved
➤ Cramped Shower:
The original shower felt like a phone booth. We relocated electrical to expand the shower footprint, giving the clients a spa-worthy space without compromising the door swing to the bedroom.
➤ Oversized Window:
The window dominated every layout option. Instead of eliminating it, we replaced it with a tall, horizontal privacy window that brings in light and creates a stunning backdrop for the new walk-in shower.
➤ Vanity Height + Storage:
Older vanities tend to sit at 32″ or less. We upgraded to a 36″ vanity (the same height as most kitchen cabinets) for comfort and added drawer storage underneath.
➤ The Water Closet Dilemma:
A separate toilet room sounds appealing, but in smaller spaces, it often does more harm than good. We prioritized openness and usability instead.
